Owls Berry Bears, 7-0
by Mark Anderson
Feb.10--The Baylor Bear bats did a hibernating act at Minute Maid Saturday evening, as the second largest crowd ever in attendance for this series saw Ryan Berry and the Rice Owls defeat Baylor, 7-0.
In a word, Berry was hot (glad someone in that place was). Over 6 innings and 94 pitches, Berry gave up only 3 hits while striking out seven. His performance moved Coach Graham to comment afterwards, "He's a good athlete, and I think he knows it." Graham said that he had control of both sides of the plate. Baylor didn't solve him the entire night.
The Owls also brought out their bats from the ice house to record nine hits on the evening. Generally, on a cold evening, balls usually don't travel very far off a bat. In the 7th inning, that theory was laid to rest by Adam Zornes. Earlier in the game, Zornes had blasted one that ended up about 404 feet away, but into dead centerfield. Zornes led off the 7th with a gargantuan shot that had home run written on it from the moment it left the bat to the moment it finally came back down beyond the wall in left. Zornes knew what to look for, "and he put it right down the middle of the plate," Zornes explained later.
Other Owls got their licks in too. Tyler Henley had 3 hits--2 in the box score, and one in the stands for one unlucky fan not paying attention. Joe Savery added the third run to the board in the 5th inning with a single up the middle. "I hit it on the ground and it got through," Joe would say later. Only two Owls in the starting lineup--Dodson and Luna--were without hits, but both didn't get cheated in their at-bats.
We would be remiss here without mentioning Travis Reagan's homer in the eighth. Travis found what he was looking for and while I haven't seen the ball, I'm sure it looks like it had a visit to the tattoo parlor. But more important to Travis was the win. "This is our first D-1 win of the year," Travis pointed out. He felt the win would give the Owls an important boost as they begin to build momentum. Let's hope big Mo shows up for the Owls again Sunday evening (and for those who are tired of freezing to death inside a domed stadium, let's hope big Mo brings some warmer weather).
Ryan Tacker closed this game out with a save, going three innings and not giving up a run. Tacker admitted to some adrenaline pumping while he was on the mound.
Tomorrow night, Joe Savery will be the starting pitcher as Rice faces A & M at 6 pm. Pics of this game to be posted soon.
